Happy new year – 2021

Well, this has been a busy year for me personally. I was unable to release new versions of Transposh in the needed frequency, and changes that happened in the wordpress framework has caused parts of the plugin to malfunction.

I will be updating the plugin soon. As there are several issues that are currently bothering users that have upgraded to a more recent wordpress. The first being a deprecation of old jQuery functions, causing the lazy loader used by the plugin not to function properly. This will probably get fixed by either replacing the lazy loader or canceling this feature. The arguments are divided between the different approaches. When Transposh was conceived, loading a useless script of 100k seemed a bit much, but the internet has since progressed in speed. And I am not really sure if people even bother to optimize their sites any more. The lazy loaders for jQuery which support CSS files are also rather rare, and nothing new has been released for a few years.

The second major issue was the usage of jQueryUI as the dialog platform that the plugin relies on. jQueryUI development has also been extremely quiet for the last few years. And I was unable to find a suitable dialog alternative. The need to change approach completely or write some dialog component of my own is another very large task. I will probably just make it work again. But this quick-glue solution will have to change.

I want to thank everyone who has been supportive of the plugin and its development in the last decade. This is what makes me keep supporting the plugin.

Version 1.0.6 – Happy new decade!

Hello everyone, we have released this minor update as we have entered the third decade in which we are operating and supporting this plugin. The path has not been an easy one, and the task of supporting so many installations for free has never been very simple. We really try to get back to anyone who contacts us using our contact form. People who opt to pay for support really get a faster response, so feel free to try this.

If we go over this decade, many things have changed. There are now more languages supported by online translation engines (directly linking to us supporting more languages) and the quality of translation they provide is a bit better. Although still leads to absurd and wrong translations now and than. This decade saw the decline of services providing a free api, but we were able to coup and still provide those services for free.

In the far past we visited a VC trying to get some funding for this project, and we recall the VC that stated that in 10 years – translation will be a solved issue. That specific VC has been hit by #metoo and translation is still not a solved issue. Only shows you that predicting the future is a difficult business.

The most requested features for our plugin, that we might even get done by the next decade are (not in order of priority):
1. Avoiding translation of company names/brands
2. Supporting multiple domain structures (eg. es.transposh.org)
3. Translatable URLs that actually work
4. Better support for ajax and dynamic content changes

Version 1.0.5 – Another happy new year!

Shana Tova! This time its a new Jewish year and a new version was just released, finally updating jQueryUI library to the most recent version. Adding a link to the translation emails to help admins get to the translation editor quicker, there are also some other minor issues related fixes. You are more than welcomed to try this new version and share your thoughts with us.

Version 1.0.4 – Happy new year!

Yesterday we released our new version. The new version is mainly about bugfixes that we collected in the last few months. What is interesting is that the bugs mostly were created by the fact that the world around us is changing. When we started, php was at version 4-5, and now we are at version 7 (with 7.2 causing deprecation for some functions and changes to regular expressions). WordPress was somewhere at version 3, now with version 5 that have introduced new features (and a new quotes related bug which was extremely tricky to find). But still – we adapted, and we hope that the coming year will bring some more new releases and interesting features we will be able to share with all of you.

Update 10/1/19 Please note that php 5.2 is no longer supported. If you must use it please download version 1.0.3.1 or below.

Version 1.0.3 – Why don’t you send me a message?

We are excited to announce the newest version, released yesterday.

This version is all about the mail feature, and human translation management improvements.

The mail feature will enable the admin to get notifications on human translations made to the site, in the free version you will get a message as soon as a new translation is posted. In the full version you also have the option to allow the messages to buffer (so you will get a single message after a user have translated some strings on the site). You also have the option to receive a daily digest of new translations made to the site. You may also choose the address the messages will be sent to, just leave it blank for the administrator’s email.

Another feature that was improved on this version is the backend translation editor, while still not allowing you to actually translate on the backend, you can now manage the translations with ease by using the filtering feature that was added and the bulk actions that now actually work. 🙂
