Some insights to the upcoming release

The next version is going to include some meaningful changes on the client side, mainly we have switched to asynchronous loading of our script and on demand loading of other scripts used within (such as jQuery UI, Google Translate API, Microsoft Translate API and others).
The change means that the page loads much faster and it becomes more responsive. Also hangups that were caused by slow loading of the third party scripts (such as the one reported in this bug) will be eliminated.
This release might also include an update to jQuery 1.4 which has a much faster engine, and since it is planed for release on January 14th, we hope to release on the 15th.
The pre-release is already running on this site, so if you encounter any problems in translated pages, please inform us.

Replytocom Redirector

During working on the new features for transposh, we have stumbled upon an issue which we could fix. The issue was that many bots scanning this site scanned pages with the parameter “replytocom” which is quite useless. Apparently – this useless parameter has caused over 2GB of traffic for this site in the last 9 months.

We have taken the liberty to extract a few lines of code and create a plugin which fixes this. Now available at the wordpress plugin directory.

A small rant about the wordpress site, since the voting for plugins is anonymous, the plugin was voted down by someone, which we have no way to know who he (or she) is. Not with any reasons we can think of (After all, free plugin, to fix a specific problem, with no intentions, which just works). If we’ll put our hands on him…. :)

Translation can drive traffic to your site

We have received information (and a nice picture) from Mike Jan from iPhone bashing site.

Bash.ch traffic jump after transposh filter install

Bash.ch traffic jump after transposh filter install

Transposh aims to make your site much more accessible to others, which naturally includes search engines. This in turn allows more users to get to your site and find your content (even if originally it was written in a language they can’t understand). This site serves as a perfect example, originally written in German, when its great content became translated (and therefor much more available) its reach skyrocketed ;)

We welcome others to share their own stories on comments to this post, have you experienced similar success? Nothing at all? What do you feel is still missing? We’re always happy to hear.

CSS sprites coming

The next version, which is coming at the end of next week will include support for css sprites for the flag widget. This have advantages in terms of speed and number of requests made to the web server. The code is already active on this site and we would appreciate that you let us know of any issues you encounter on the client side (non standard browsers – IE6, etc).

Anyone that want to take the code for a spin, is more than welcomed to contact us to get the pre-release code.

Going faster, simpler

The next version of the plugin will be released in the coming week. Final testing is being done as I am writing this. This is a relatively major release as we have changed the parser component to simplehtmldom. The new parser offers more features (main one is the ability to translate tooltips and hidden elements) while being 50% faster than the previous version. Simpler code also means it will be easier to add features and fix bugs in the future.

Feeling adventurous? You can try the latest code directly from our SVN repository or mail us to get an alpha release.
